Why Our Gold
When you invest in a piece of jewellery, the material matters. This is a clear explanation of what your piece is made from, how it’s designed to last, and how to care for it over time.
THE METAL - GOLD PLATED BRASS
Most Carou pieces are crafted from gold plated brass with 925 sterling silver findings - including posts, clasps, and fine chains that sit directly against the skin.
A solid brass base is layered with a thick coating of real gold through an electroplating process, creating a warm, durable surface that holds intricate markings and engravings.
THE METAL - GOLD VERMEIL
Some Carou pieces are made in gold vermeil - a 2.5 micron layer of 18K gold over a base of 925 sterling silver. This process has a significantly thicker gold layer which adds to durability, particularly suited to rings which are in constant contact with the skin.
WHY THESE MATERIALS?
We choose these materials because they allow each design to come to life; every mark, surface, and engraving is created and kept as intended. Brass and silver can be etched and shaped by hand to showcase the molten edges and intricate details - something that harder metals such as stainless steel cannot emulate.
Real gold is used to finish each piece, chosen for its warm, soft glow that cannot be replicated by manmade alternatives.
WHY NOT SOLID GOLD?
Because the designs would not exist in solid gold at this scale, and very few would be able to buy them.
The This Fire of Mine earrings would cost over $4,000. The Golden Light earrings cast in gold would become inaccessible to most.
Solid gold at these dimensions would be twice the weight and significantly heavier - compromising the design. And this is not a compromise. Carou is not a compromise. It is a considered material choice made for the benefit of the design and the person wearing it.
HOW LONG IT LASTS
With care, each Carou piece retains its finish for years. Longevity depends on how they are worn and cared for. Many customers wear their pieces daily for years, with the original finish still present.
REPLATING SERVICE
Gold plated jewellery can naturally patina in tone over time, particularly with frequent wear.
We offer a re-plating service to restore your piece to its original finish, so it can continue to be worn and loved. You can purchase with confidence, knowing you can make your Carou pieces new again. For enquiries, contact info@caroujewellery.
HOW TO CARE FOR IT
Carou jewellery responds best to simple care.
To preserve its finish:
- Avoid water where possible (remove before swimming or showering)
- Avoid contact with perfume, sunscreen, and hair products
- Store pieces in an airtight container
- Ensure items are stored individually to avoid surface friction
